When a diesel engine is operated in a hazardous area or in an application where special precautions are justified, it is often a general requirement that the engine automatically shuts down if its speed, critical temperatures or oil pressure fall outside of predetermined limits. It is widely recognised that the best method to achieve such an emergency automatic shut down is by closure of an engine air intake shut down (shut off) valve. To comply with EN 1834-1:2000 both the engine air intake and diesel fuel supply must be shut down automatically in the event of engine overspeed. It must also be possible to operate the air shut down valve manually.
