New Spark Arrestor ranges to permit diesel engines to be used in
offshore
oil platforms and in Defined Hazardous Zones
March 2011
Chalwyn Spark Arrestors developed specifically to meet ATEX 94/9/EC (incorporating EN 1834) for oil and gas exploration and production markets are now available from Chalwyn distributors. They come with Certificate of Conformity that confirms the test acceptance to EN1834 by ‘Sira’, an approved UK Notified Body.
Our Stainless Steel Spark Arrestors were developed specifically to prevent the risk of fire from the ignition of flammable materials caused by spark emission from the exhausts of diesel engines.
This risk can be so high that LNG or Petrochemical Refining site access is often barred unless effective spark arrestors are fitted. USDA or similar forest use approved products that filter the hot particles but allow them to pass out still glowing must now be considered unsuitable for use in any markets where a single spark would ignite any flammable vapours or accidental gas release with concentrations above the Lower Explosive Limit.
Chalwyn’s centrifugal cyclone design spins all live carbon particles in the exhaust gas at high velocity against the outer casing, retaining them until they are quenched to a safe temperature and so rendered inert. Most Chalwyn SSL models can replace existing silencers, maintaining sufficient noise attenuation for normal industrial use with no significant increase in back pressure. The compact SSE range may be fitted in series with a normal silencer for ease of installation and can be used instead of a muffler in offshore and remote locations where less noise attenuation is acceptable. Drawings and application information can be found in this pdf;
he earlier model SAL range (with Carbon Steel body construction) is still available and can be used outside of the European Community. Please contact Chalwyn for full details of our range.

New versions of MPX valves
November 2010
The Chalwyn MPX-300 & -500 air pressure to trip valves are now available with electrical circuit micro-switches. The new valve models MPX-310 and MPX-510 are designed for applications including larger trucks where the overspeed problem is controlled by an air pressure to stop system (please see Systems Guide). When the valve is tripped to the closed position the micro-switch closes a circuit that can illuminate a remote position indication bulb on the vehicle’s dash board, so helping the driver to know that the MPX valve must be manually reset before attempting to restart the engine.
The full range of Chalwyn MPX valves can be seen at http://www.chalwyn.com/pdfs/CE236.pdf

Expansion
to range of Chalwyn diesel engine automatic intake shut down valves.
February 2008
A new valve, the D41, has been added to the “mini-range” of Chalwyn automatic over speed shut down valves. Suitable for diesel engines rated up to 27kW [36hp], the D41 is designed for a range of applications where the much larger D40 valve would previously have been specified. It is therefore particularly advantageous where space restrictions apply. For full specifications see Chalwyn publication CE209.
Also recently introduced, the D45-F3L and D51-F4L automatic intake shut
down valves have been specially developed for direct mounting to
the intake manifold of specific applications.
Powered by Deutz 1011 and 2011 engines. Again these valves have particular advantage where space is restricted.Full details are given in Chalwyn publication CE246.
hese new valves are all also available with the addition of manual shut down control.
Update to Chalwyn mini range automatic

Chalwyn release new range of temperature valves
March 2007
Following extensive development and testing, Chalwyn have extended their range of diesel engine safety products with the release of a new range of temperature valves.Chalwyn temperature valves are designed for incorporation into engine oil pressure or air pressure operated diesel engine automatic engine shut down systems and are suitable for zone 1 / zone 2 hazardous area applications. These valves when used in combination with other current Chalwyn products.
FSX fuel shut off valves allow a complete system to be built up to give automatic engine shut down on engine over speed [run away], high exhaust temperature, high coolant temperature or low oil pressure as well as a direct manual emergency shut down. Simpler systems, such as fuel shut off on high coolant temperature, can also easily be engineered. No electrical connections are involved.
Where certified hazardous area electrically operated automatic engine shut down systems are specified, the established Chalwyn Series 110, 111 and 210 products continue to be available.
New diesel engine automatic fuel shut down
valve from Chalwyn
February 2006
The long serving Chalwyn LUBE STOP valve was recently superseded by a completely new product. Like its predecessor this new valve, the LST-200, automatically stops the diesel fuel supply to an engine immediately on detection of loss of engine oil pressure, thereby avoiding potentially expensive downtime and repairs.
The new LST-200 now also features a simple manual control to latch the valve open following an emergency shut down should fuel system bleeding be required. Once the engine is running this manual latch is automatically released to regain full engine protection.
Chalwyn will also shortly be releasing a range of mechanical temperature valves. These can be used for example in conjunction with the LST-200 to extend its operation to automatically shut down fuel on high coolant temperature as well as on low oil pressure.
New Chalwyn electronic diesel engine safety system
May 2004
By combining a number of well-proven products with modern Control Units,
Chalwyn have launched a new range of electronically controlled safety shut
down systems for diesel engines. These are specifically designed for engines
operating in hazardous areas or other critical situations where emergency
automatic shut down of the engine air intake is part of the required specification.
In operation, these new systems shut down the engine by automatically
closing both the intake air and fuel valves on detection of low engine oil
pressure, high temperatures or engine overspeed. Additionally some variants
will respond to an input shut down signal from a gas detection or other
external system. Manual emergency shut down of the air intake valve is also
included.
An outstanding feature of this new product range is the ease of setting
the engine overspeed trip value with no special skills or knowledge required.
This is a simple push button operation carried out with the equipment fully
installed on the engine and no calculations / knowledge related to pulley
sizes / drive ratios is required. For security, this push button is designed
to be tamper proof when trip speed setting or checking is not in progress.
All hazardous area versions are certified in accordance with the ATEX
Directive for Zone 1, Group IIB, T4 applications and are suitable for engines
meeting the requirements of EN1843-1:2000. Lower cost and more compact uncertified
versions are also available where added engine safety is required for non
hazardous area applications.
